Abstract
The effect of some spices on liver drug metabolizing activity was evaluated by measuring the duration of hexobarbital-induced hypnosis in mice. The experimental results obtained with 22 plant extracts were as follows; Oral administration of seven plant extracts such as Fennel seeds, Dill weads, Nutmeg, White pepper, Mace (aril), Sage leaves and Paprika to mice daily for 7 days caused a significant shortening effect on the duration of sleeping time. The treatment of mice with a single i.p. injection of 9 plant extracts resulted in a significant prolongation of sleeping time. These results strongly indicated that some spices might affect the activity of liver microsomal enzyme systems.
